There are three things really:How to prime a canvas or surface;How to thin your paint; andThe laws of paint application.You can see the details of all this in our article on oil painting techniques for beginners, but let’s run through some of the basics here.In regards to the first point, if you paint in oil on a surface that has not been primed â€" such as an unprimed canvas â€" you are going to be exposing the threads of cotton or linen in the canvas to the oil. This will make the fibres in the canvas rot â€" and your paint will begin to flake off.Secondly, you know that you are going to clean your brush with white spirit â€" because water and oil don’t mix. However, these spirits are also essential for thinning your paint too.Why would you want to do that? Sometimes you don’t want your oil paint to be as thick as when it comes out of the tube (su ch as when you are doing underpainting). As such, you can add spirits â€" and oil too â€" to your paints to make them less thick.Finally, there are two primary laws of oil painting: fat over lean and thick over thin. In both cases, you want the fast drying paint to be applied first. Thick paint â€" and ‘fat’ paint, that paint that is oilier â€" needs to be applied later. Should you take the SAT or ACT in 2014 One of the most common questions we get here at AJ Tutoring is whether a student should take the ACT in addition to (or instead of) the SAT. Read on for more information to help you make the decision!How do the SAT and ACT differ?ACT questions are generally more straightforwardThe ACT has a science section, which the SAT does not haveThe SAT tests more vocabularyMath on the SAT only includes algebra and geometry, while math on the ACT includes more advanced trigonometryThe SAT is split up into more sectionsThe ACT is a faster-paced testSo, which test should my student take? Its difficult to predict which test is a better fit until students actually take the tests and compare their scores.  Subjectively, most students prefer the ACT because it feels like an easier test.   However, after the scores are scaled, most students get similar scores on both tests.  Some students, though, perform much better on one test and since colleges accept both tests for admission, we always recommend trying both the SAT and ACT!How can my student take a practice ACT test? AJ Tutoring offers free proctored practice tests for current students most Saturday mornings at our Palo Alto, Menlo Park, and San Jose offices.  Students are welcome to take a practice ACT, which we will score and compare to prior PSAT and SAT scores.   If its clear that the students score is much higher on one test than the other, its an easy decision thats the test we should focus on in the spring.  However, if the scores are similar, we recommend preparing for both tests.How do we prepare for the ACT? Get a head start with learning a language in a new country As you begin your international teaching placements, you may be headed off to a new country with no knowledge of how to speak the native language. In some cases, you’ll be exposed to a completely different alphabet. Don’t fretâ€"use these simple tips that won’t take much time or trouble to get started learning a new language. The more you can learn, the more comfortable you’ll feel in your new city.Study lessWe know this seems counterintuitive, but there have been studies that show that simply reading textbooks and filling out workbooks when learning a language aren’t as effective as getting out into the world and activating that language. Full immersion is your friend! Don’t be shy to make mistakes, people will just appreciate the fact that you’re trying to learn their language. Take as many opportunities as you can to use your target language to communicate with the people around youâ€"even picking up a local newspaper and committing to read one article a day is more effective than studying a textbook and will help you advance more quickly.Stock up on sticky notesOne problem many people report when learning a new language is that they constantly forget common, everyday words that they imagined would be the easiest for them to remember. Using sticky notes to label everything around your apartment in your target language will give you constant little reminders to help you learn these words and work them into your vocabulary.Switch up your music playlistListening to music in a target language can be surprisingly helpful, even though you might feel like you’re doing no studying at all. March 8 International Womens Day Greetings Each year in the first month of spring on March 8th International Women’s Day is celebrated around the world. International Women’s Day may be hardly called international as the tradition to celebrate this day does not exist internationally. Only in some countries like China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria it is a national holiday. However still this day is also known as the United Nations (UN) Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace which celebrates women’s achievements worldwide and throughout history. All over the world women consider March 8th a day of pleasant emotions, high spirits, and vivid impressions. The 8th of March is not only the day of Women it is also a day when the warmth of our harts breaks the ice and Winter gives way to Spring. For most of people this holiday is a mixture of  Mothers Day  and  St. Valentines Day. But the main benefit of March 8th is that this holiday celebrates all women, including mothers, grandmothers, daughters, girlfriends, female tutors and students. Tips for Taking the GRE shop.catprep.com What better way to study for the exam than to take a mock version of it? This is a great and not to mention free option to prepare yourself for the big day! There are plenty of online resources such as Princeton Review, Kaplan, 4Tests, and more, where practice tests are readily available. Even EST, the company that made the GRE, has a mock-up edition which can be easily downloaded free of charge. The EST test can be found here. These test questions cover a variety of topics including the three main categories: Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning. All three of these will be covered on the practice exams which is an excellent gauge of how you will perform on the test. Your final result is an obvious but also helpful indicator of how you will score on the real exam. If completing a full test-run of the test isn’t exactly something that interests you, websites also have just the questions accessible. Some valuable sources include Peterson’s, Kaplan, Test Prep Review and more. As they say, practice makes perfect! 2. Well as childish and pointless as they may seem, they do work. John Dunlosky of Kent State University and a variety of accomplished psychological scientists determined the best study methods in their latest study published in the Association for Psychological Science’s journal. As Dunlosky explains, “We wanted to take a comprehensive look at promising strategies now, in order to direct teachers, students and parents to the strategies that are effective, yet underused.” As he  and his team discovered, flashcards, the act of self-testing, is the most effective method besides studying over a distributed amount of time. 3. Rest and Relaxation pexels.com   It may be easier said than done, but try to take care of yourself mentally while preparing for a stressful event such as taking an influential exam. It is essential to not become overwhelmed with stress and self-doubt. If you take time out of each day ahead of time to study with effective methods for a quality amount of time, then you have done all that you can do and there is no reason to worry or freak out. Take study breaks to ease your brain and continue to do activities that you enjoy. Although it may seem like the ‘norm’ do not try to cram in information last minute. Any information you attempt to cram will most likely go to your short-term memory and not your long-term memory. Remember to also take care of your body during this time. Make sure to be eating and eating well-balanced meals. Try to get seven to nine hours of sleep each night, especially the night before the GRE. Keep a positive attitude to complete your self-care portion of GRE study preparation. 4. Test Day freeimageslive.co.uk You finally made it! The big day is here, so now what? Make sure to give yourself ample time to get to your test taking site if you are taking the test in person. It might be a smart idea to try driving to the place where the exam is being given a day early to get a grip of its surroundings and possible parking. The last thing you need to get in your way of the exam is frivolous things such as travel time. Try to arrive early just to ease any fears you might have about missing the test or arriving late. Bring a valid form of identification, maybe even two forms just in case! Bring a large water bottle and some energy packed snacks to help keep your focus. Try some healthy snacks such as fruit bars, trail mix, and more. During the short breaks in between sections be active and stretch your body out. Get that blood pumping and oxygen flowing in order to keep your brain going!
